Chapter 12

When Nora arrived at the Tunie, no one was at the front desk, and she put her purse under the counter. Marty came around the corner from the business office.

"Hey. You're early. Did you find Dominic?" Marty asked.

"He was digging in the garage parking lot. And yes, Paranormal Party fans, they found the brothel. Unfortunately, they also created a hazardous area that resulted in my being rescued after I fell through a break in the pavement."

"Are you okay?" Marty asked.

"Yes. I don't think I broke anything," Nora answered, brushing her backside.

"What was it like down there? Corsets hung on the looking glass."

"You read too many romantic novels. It was dark, empty, and musty."

"Maybe I do. I'm only glad you're all right. I've had it up to here with all of this. We hired a front desk clerk, not a paranormal investigator."

Nora pulled her cell phone out and put it in the desk drawer. As she opened the cluttered drawer, a pair of shiny scissors gleamed up at her. M.A. was beautifully etched on the side. Marcia's scissors. How had they ended up here? And what was all over them?

Dominic came into the lobby. "Did Nora tell you about the discovery? We are so close to finding the treasure."

"How exciting for you, but did you forget about showing up to work today?" Marty asked. "When you are on the clock, you are behind that desk. Do you understand?"

"I know. For that, I apologize, and I promise to make it up to you," Dominic said.

"Do you have more ghost hunting with Jack and Daisy tonight?" Nora asked.

"No. They need to edit the footage. Jack has a method, you know. But I have quite an exciting evening planned." He looked at Nora. "I'm taking your sister out."

"Lucy?" Nora didn't expect this pairing to move so quickly. As Dominic finished speaking, he pulled a comb out of his pocket and went over and looked at his reflection in an ornamental mirror. He pulled the comb through his thick, black hair.

"Of course, Lucy. Who else? You have more sisters hidden away somewhere because, as I got to tell you, this one was quite a surprise."

"No, she's the only one. Although I do have a brother," Nora informed him.

"Not interested." He put his comb back in his pocket and drew closer to Nora. "So, tell me, what kind of food does she like?"

"Well, seeing as you only have three choices here in Piney Woods, I suggest trying that new restaurant, The Yellow Gingham Kitchen. Tuck and I tried it out the other night, and we liked it."

"Do they have spaghetti?"

"No."

"Lasagna?"

"No."

"Veal Parmesan?"

"No. No. No. Chicken fried steak, catfish, corn, fritters."

"Ah, the food of the South, land of ample breading."

"And sweet tea that will send you to the Happy Smiley Dentist," Marty said.

He straightened the collar on his shirt and put his comb back in his pocket. "I'll take it into consideration." He checked his watch. "I'd hoped to have a little more time to make myself presentable, but I guess that didn't work out today.
